Do I have enough qualifications to succeed as an entrepreneur?
entrepreneur

Starting your own business is certainly not an easy step. There are an incredible amount of factors and rules to take into consideration in order to succeed in this extremely competitive world nowadays. Some of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs started their empires with no money in their pockets and no experience in the field, but they did it and became legends anyway. Look at Steve Jobs or Bill Gates as examples.

If you are also planning on launching your own company, here are some tips that you should keep in mind if you want to become an outstanding entrepreneur. Don’t worry too much if some of the characteristics listed below are not part of your personality, because they can still be learned with practice, determination and effort.

1) Do what you love

2) Make well-structured plans

3) Invest your money wisely

4) Self-promote your business

5) Build an engaging brand image

6) Conduct lots of market research

7) Be ahead of competition

8) Create an excellent team of experts

9) Build a positive reputation

10) Be organised and punctual

11) Take care of your online presence

12) Create a clear, simple and fresh website

13) Build a solid professional network

14) Allow yourself to take breaks and relax

According to recent research, some of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs do not have a university qualification, while only 12% owns a business degree. This could come across as a surprising fact since common knowledge would make us assume that, in order to become a top notch entrepreneur, a background in finance, economics or marketing might be necessary. Several studies, in fact, demonstrate that usually those legendary entrepreneurs who completed a post-secondary education, have degrees in areas that have apparently nothing in common with business and entrepreneurship, such as art history, literature, medicine, law, while 22% of entrepreneurs interviewed stated to own a degree in engineering.

This proves that the key to success is not only education, but especially a mix of knowledge, practice, excellent leadership, great interpersonal skills, as wells strong understanding of numbers and investments.

More difficult is trying to understand what the secret behind leading entrepreneurs is and what makes them so unique and powerful. There are millions of clever and ambitious entrepreneurs around the globe and yet, only a small percentage of them has reached global fame, so what is the crucial element that allows smart entrepreneurs to shine? Is it luck, right connections or something else? The answer could be much simpler than we imagine: passion. Feeling love and passion for our business ideas and projects and being always ready to support and fight for them, no matter what, is the key to outstanding entrepreneurship.

Increasing Your Personal Efficiency
efficiency

Being a manager/owner and running a business has its own stresses and strains, but sooner or later you may find yourself running on fumes ? especially with Christmas just around the corner. Here are some tips you can use to ensure you don’t fall behind:

The Urgency Trick - When was the last time you were late for work? Or late for a meeting? You may remember that when you realised you were late, you started to move quicker than you ever had before! This is because your mind felt the urgency of the situation, and your mind moved to solely focus on getting to work ASAP. You can in fact use this mode to your own advantage. Effectively, you can trick yourself into believing that you are in an urgent situation, such as temporarily fooling yourself into believing there will be repercussions for not finishing the task quick enough. This will inevitably begin to make you move faster. However, this is best used for tasks which don’t require too much thought. This is because when you are in this frame of mind, you will notice that you stop thinking, and the subconscious takes over. Thus, if a task requires that you think carefully, keep this one in the bag for later!

Breaks are Not Just for Lightweights - Make sure you do take breaks throughout your working day. During breaks, don’t do anything that looks like work, or even work-related reading ? it is always best to take your mind away from work completely, so that your mind can refresh. Furthermore, it is advisable to take at least one day or more off per week. This is an important part of your cycle and work-life balance. When taking days off, you need to discipline yourself to ensure that you don’t work whatsoever, and throughout the day remind yourself that this is your day off, and you need to enjoy it whilst you can. Towards the end of that day, build yourself up for the next day by thinking about how much you look forward to getting stuck into the tasks at hand. Taking time off also ensures that you work harder at the right times.

Mental Triggers - It is not uncommon to feel low on energy from time-to-time, or feel like you would rather be doing something else (or if you’re waiting for the end of the day so you can go home!). Set yourself a mental trigger. This can be a word or a phrase, such as “pump it up”, or “go” (whatever suits). When you say this word/phrase in your mind (with enthusiasm), and click your fingers at the same time, force yourself to get moving and take your energy level up a notch. Sooner or later, every time you repeat this mental trigger your mind will kick into another gear.

The End Objective is More Important than the Work - All of the greatest achievements in life have come about because someone had an objective. You’ve probably heard so many writers talk endlessly about objectives, but think about what you are working towards, or what you will have achieved once you are finished the task you’re about to embark upon. By doing this you will make yourself more eager to get on with the work, as you will be visualising the goal, and not the tiresome journey needed to get you there.

There’s a Time and a Place - I call this the “Time Basis for Realisation” – (I’m not sure if it is known by another name elsewhere). You always work better on a task when you are in the right frame of mind for it. Sometimes when you have set aside time for a task, and you come to do it, you don’t feel up to it, or aren’t in the right frame of mind. Some make the mistake of thinking that this is a form of laziness, but it’s absolutely not. You will find that if you leave the task, and come back to it when you are ready, you will perform much better. This idea doesn’t work for daily routine tasks, or matters that are urgent and must be attended to right away, but for the letter you have to write to your suppliers, or the blog article you want to put together – this should work.

On the back of this, you may recall a BBC news report that was about the Cambridge University study, which demonstrated that musicians are more creative when they are away from their instrument, or away from practice sessions (you know, tapping, drumming, whistling, humming, composing, when they are supposed to be doing other things). What does this tell us about ourselves as business-people? It means that your best ideas on how to solve a problem, complete a task, write a letter, etc. will come to you when you are not sitting at your desk trying to do it. Therefore, keep a notepad in your bag, download a voice recorder app to your phone, because when you get an idea or think of how you want to word something, you’ll need to capture it there and then. This practice of capturing the ideas you have about your work, will save you lots of time when you come to complete the task at hand.

Thinking to Grow Your Business
business growth

by Angela De Souza

Business owners are usually busy, very busy! In fact, they are so busy that they seldom have time to think.

Each morning presents a long to do list and at the end of each day they exhale, feeling satisfied by all the ticks they have placed next to the many items that were on the list. However, what they often fail to realise is that they are happily running in the hamster wheel of the never ending to do list.

Eventually they will exhaust themselves and never get free from it UNLESS they stop and think. Women are predominantly guilty of feeling guilty. They feel guilty for most things. Women even feel guilty for not working and can even feel guilty for feeling guilty. Taking time to think is classified as work, so business owners don’t need to feel guilty. Thinking time is what separates the self employed from business owners. The self employed will only ever be able to exchange time for money and since they only have twenty four hours in each day like the rest of us, their earning potential is limited to what they can do within these twenty four hours.

Hard Work is Not Enough

Hard work and saving money could earn you a living but smart work and financial investments will build you a legacy. To get ahead start with not filling every minute of every day with only hard work. Stop and THINK – relax and then formulate a plan to work smarter. One hour of thinking each day could turn your business from a small business into a large, successful company. Even one hour of thinking a week could turn things around significantly.

Think about what you are currently doing with your time. Think about where you plan to go with your business. Think about a smarter way to get there. Are you satisfied with exchanging time for money or would you rather that your money worked for you even when you are not even working on your business? Think carefully about ways to achieve that. Take time to ponder on what you really want out of every day of your business and life in general. Dream about what your ideal day, week, month and year can look like. Create a plan that will allow you to begin to live the dream.

Smart Working Principles

Multiply Energy – Piggy Back
You don’t need to reinvent the wheel. What is there that already exists that you can use or who do you know that can help you get where you want to be? If you take time to think you will be amazed at what you will discover. Are you using the trending hash tags on Twitter to get your status and posts seen? That is a very basic way to piggy back. Do you network and connect with people in high places? For example, if you are a painter you might be going door to door to offer your services. Why not rather find an established business that does plastering and then collaborate with them - piggy back on the established company and save yourself hours of knocking on doors. Piggy backing could also mean volunteering your services to a larger organisation. You may not directly make any money by volunteering but you could benefit a great deal from the publicity that would result.

Piggy Backing Etiquette
• You must not be competing with them
• You can be aiming for the same target audience but should not get in their way
• You should piggy backing but not be a parasite, give something back

Multiply Time – Other People’s Time
Yes, you can actually make time too by using other people’s time. It doesn’t have to be as selfish as it sounds, you can use other people’s time and still benefit them as well as yourself. For example, ask five really good friends to share your Facebook status – it won’t take them more than a few seconds but you will reach hundreds more people that way, saving you loads of time that you would have spent trying to find and communicate with those new people.

This is the most basic example of other people’s time, but another important key to using other people’s time is to outsource. What can someone else do better or quicker than you? A common cause of businesses failing is when the business owner insists on doing everything all of the time! The problem is that you can only do so much in a day.
Outsourcing is the next step to your business growth. Use other people’s time to get certain jobs done while you focus in what you enjoy and do best. It doesn’t have to be a huge leap of faith either, start by outsourcing one or two hours a week and increase it as your business grows.
Think about what you can outsource and who you should outsource to. Perhaps take on an intern or student. The possibilities are endless, but you will need to put in some thinking time to come up with the right thing that works for you.

Multiply Money – 1 + 1 = 3
The saying, “It takes money to make money” is not entirely true. Well it is and it isn’t. You see, how you get the money to make more money is where most people are tripped up. Most people envisage a huge pot of money that will then guarantee business success. Most businesses that start this way will fail anyway. The reason they fail is because they haven’t had to put in the hard thinking time. When money is easily available, little effort is put into important decisions. Once the money runs out, the business naturally fails. However, those who start with little money are forced to think and be creative with it. It is these habits that are forged in the early days that ensure later success when their money pot has grown. Take time to think about what you have right now and how you can make it grow. Don’t make the excuse that you don’t have any money, you do, and it is enough. Richard Branson didn’t even have money to make a phone call when he started out but that didn’t stop him.

Money Multiplying
• Sell your knowledge – seminars, webinars, workshops.
• Take payment up front – create instant cash flow.
• Collaborate – offer swaps.
• Think, think, think!

There is so much that you are capable of doing and achieving and all it takes is a little thinking time that will prevent you from remaining chained to your never ending to do list.

Become a great business ‘athlete’

Become a great business ‘athlete’
2012 Olympics are long gone but successes of our Olympians are still in our memories (or, at least, in mine). I am a big sport fan who is always curious about how athletes achieve their peak performance and how they sustain it over time. So let’s explore their journey and check what we can learn from it in business.
Believe in yourself
There were many doubts when Jessica Ennis missed the Olympics in Beijing due to her injury. However, what happened in London could now be a sport psychology text book motivational case study. In business, you have probably learnt by now that so called ‘failure’ can make you very successful. Try not to be put off by occasional hiccups as they can actually propel you and your business to the next level.
Can you excel in many areas? Yes, you can!
Do you remember Rebeca Romero’s successes? She is a great athlete who became only the second woman of any country to win a medal in two different sports at Olympic Games: rowing and cycling consecutively. There is a lesson for any business in this story. Your strategy is definitely not set in stone and you can diversify, and be as, or even, more successful in a different market segment.
Be different
Just like Dick Fosbury, who changed the high jump forever, you need to carve your niche. Sometimes you may come across a lot of resistance, laughter and a lack of understanding of your business approach. Despite all these issues, persevere and celebrate ‘the difference’ (marketing strategists do confirm that it is very difficult to copy that different entrepreneurial streak).
Get a mentor
So Mo Farah’s passion for running has taken him to America. Was it about top notch facilities? Certainly not! Right there he was given an opportunity to work with a former marathon runner and an excellent coach, Alberto Salazar. You need to follow these footsteps and get a mentor who will support you in achieving amazing results in your business.
Collaborate, collaborate, collaborate…
As the members of the British cycling team would say: ‘There is no ‘I’ in our strategy. In terms of your business, you need to ensure that you surround yourself with like-minded people. Join business networks and associations, attend seminars, and search for people that can bring expertise that you need as you can’t do it all by yourself.
Sounds easy? Great! Let’s do it.
